Conservation rates: the best ‘new’ source of urban water during drought

چکیده
In the United States, water conservation-oriented rates (WCOR) are an increasingly vital tool for promoting water conservation and mitigating urban drought. Our models prove that one type of WCOR, drought demand rates (DDR), can produce with minimal regulation the quadruple objectives of conservation rates: (1) improving efficiency; (2) providing revenue neutrality; (3) assuring distributional equity and (4) guaranteeing the conservation of water. We demonstrate that such rates can also reduce days that urban streams drop below ‘critical flow’ levels, providing a voice for nature. Our study is situated in northern New Castle County (NCC), Delaware (DE), USA, and the lessons garnered have relevance for industrialized communities seeking a ‘softpath’ to drought mitigation.

Assessment of Drought impact on Irrigated Agriculture in Lorestan Province
Agriculture in Lorestan Province is based on irrigated and rainfed agriculture, which uses two sources of surface water and groundwater. One of the most important natural hazards affecting the Lorestan Province agriculture is the occurrence of drought and its consequences. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of drought on irrigated agriculture in this province. The data...
متن کاملEvaluation of groundwater quality in urban area, using Geostatistical methods in drought and wet periods (Case study: Mashhad city)
In many urban areas, groundwater has been exploited neglecting to wet and dry periods owing to of surface water deficit. In this study, using the percent of normal rainfall index, 36 year (1971-2008) were studied and a drought event and a wet event were determined. The reason to choose two consecutive years is the effect of early wet period on groundwater quality. Physicochemical characteristic...
متن کاملForecasting of Groundwater Table and Water Budget under Different Drought Scenarios using MODFLOW Model (Case Study: Garbaygan Plain, Fars Province, Iran)
Groundwater drought is a natural hazard that develops when groundwater systems are affected by climatical drought, when climatical drought occures, first groundwater recharge, later groundwater levels and groundwater discharge decrease. The origin of drought is a deficit in precipitation and that takes place in all the elements that comprise the hydrological cycle (flow in the rivers, soil mois...
متن کاملDrought Effects On Water Quality In The South Platte River Basin, Colorado
Twenty-three stream sites representing a range of forested, agricultural, and urban land uses were sampled in the South Platte River Basin of Colorado from July through September 2002 to characterize water quality during drought conditions. With a few exceptions, dissolved ammonia, Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, and dissolved orthophosphate concentrations were similar to seasonal historic...
متن کاملChemically-Treated Composted Biosolids Enhance Water Conservation and Quality on Urban Landscapes
Water conservation is a priority in San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, and other major Texas cities that routinely face water shortages and drought. Soil management is fundamental to water conservation efforts. Incorporation of composted biosolids (CB) in low quality soils can enhance water conservation and provide organic carbon and nutrients that improve growth of vegetation and limit sediment loss...
